Middle Years Literacy- Learning and Sharing Together

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:
After the winter break, we connected with our Family of Schools teachers (grade 6 and 7 teachers from Garden City, DeBeck, General Currie) to share Grade 8 team observations related to supporting and enhancing student literacy at Palmer. This collaborative sharing focused on what we are noticing in student learning, strategies that are making a difference, and areas where continued alignment can strengthen literacy transitions into secondary. We look forward in continuing this practice as we look forward in visiting our FOS in the coming months to learn and take in the observations from the teaching staff at the elementary schools.

This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

  • It strengthens collaborative professional learning across our Family of Schools by creating shared understanding around student literacy across the Middle Years
  • It supports consistent approaches to literacy instruction and assessment, particularly during the Grade 6-7–8–9 transition.
  • It encourages reflective dialogue grounded in classroom observations to inform next steps for teaching and learning.
  • It reinforces our commitment to improving student literacy outcomes by learning from one another and building collective capacity.

We look forward to continuing to build on this learning together, deepening our collaboration, and supporting student literacy growth through shared practice and ongoing communication.
