Palmer Student Voice

Introducing the Student Voice Club at RC Palmer Secondary

We are thrilled to announce the formation of the Student Voice Club at RC Palmer, a dynamic new group dedicated to amplifying student voices and fostering a more inclusive and engaged school community. This club, founded by a passionate group of students, has already made significant strides in ensuring that every student's voice is heard and valued.

Mission and Vision

The Student Voice Club was established with the mission to create a platform where students can express their ideas, concerns, and aspirations. The club aims to bridge the gap between students and the school staff, promoting a culture of open dialogue and mutual respect.

Key Initiatives

Since its inception, the Student Voice Club has launched several key initiatives:

  • Monthly Meetings: The club organizes monthly meetings where students can discuss various topics, from academic concerns to social issues. These meetings provide a safe space for students to share their thoughts and collaborate on an action plan.
  • Student Bulletin Board: With staff support, the club has arranged a central bulletin board for all school clubs to promote activities and events, as well as encourage connection in the school community beyond academics and athletics.
  • Get to Know the Teacher: The club arranges special lunchtime meetings with Palmer staff to learn about their experiences in education and build connections between students and classroom teachers.
  • Student Surveys: The club conducts regular surveys to gather insights on student satisfaction and areas for improvement. The results are shared with the school staff to create awareness about the student experience at Palmer.
  • Staff Lunch & Learn Presentation: The club will host a very special lunch and learn for teachers to present survey results and explore the question, What is one thing you wish teachers understood that could improve your learning experience as a student?

Why is this important?

Activating student voice is crucial to connection and belonging in our school community:

  1. Empowerment: When students feel heard, they are more likely to take ownership of their education and become active participants in their learning journey.
  2. Engagement: Schools that listen to students' opinions and ideas often see higher levels of engagement and motivation among students.
  3. Relevance: Students can provide insights into what is relevant and interesting to them, helping educators tailor the curriculum to better meet their needs and interests.
  4. Skill Development: Encouraging students to express their opinions helps them develop critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills.
  5. Community Building: A school environment that values student voice fosters a sense of community and belonging, which can improve overall school culture and climate.

Looking Ahead

The Student Voice Club is committed to continuing its efforts to amplify student voices and drive positive change. Future plans include trialing a digital suggestion box, hosting guest speakers on relevant topics, and collaborating with other student organizations to address common goals.

We are incredibly proud of the Student Voice Club and their dedication to making RC Palmer a better place for everyone. We encourage all students to get involved and share their voices, as together, we can create a more vibrant and inclusive school community.
