Palmer’s Winning Tradition at the 2025 Greater Vancouver Science Fair - Multiple Medals and a Trip to the Nationals
Out of the seven entries Palmer sent to the 2025 Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair held at UBC, R. C. Palmer was recognized with two Silver Medals, one Bronze Medal, one Honorable Mention and one Gold Medal -- in addition to three special awards. This places Palmer as the Top Richmond District school overall again and one of the top five public schools in the Greater Vancouver Regionals in medal count for the Junior and Intermediate Divisions that Palmer competes in.
In the Junior Division, Chantelle Yen won a Silver Medal and the BC Greenhouse Growers Association Award for her project. Katie Yee also won Silver while Tyrus Chan won a Bronze Medal to round out the Junior Division.
For grade nines (competing with grade tens in the Intermediate Division), Allen Xu’s project to use AI to detect disease in plants received an Honorable Mention (Fourth) while the Verdi Sustainability Award was given to Yuri Kim and Yolanda Liang’s innovative arsenic cleanup solution. After placing first at Palmer, Emma Liu and Dorothy Li’s project to create a kelp-alternative ‘band-aid’ unfortunately did not beat out their competitors in their very tough health science field but aim to be back next year.
The biggest story for Palmer this year was Riya Dua’s Gold Medal for her project to convert plastic waste to electricity vial a microbial fuel cell. Riya also won a SHAD Canada Community Changemakers Prize, and one of the 14 overall Grand Award Winners of the GVRSF and thus selection to advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair on an all expense-paid trip to New Brunswick later in May! Riya is the sixth Gold/Grand Award Winner from Palmer to be selected to the nationals – the Canada Wide competition in the 16 years that Palmer’s Science Fair has competed at the GVRSF (not including two COVID-years). Let’s cheer Riya on!
